We’re delighted to share some exciting news from our English Department! Mrs Cristina George (Head of English) and Mrs Katherine Tarring (English Teacher & Head of Sixth Form) have had their abridged edition of Jane Eyre published through Hachette, complete with a full pack of teaching resources designed specifically for KS3 classrooms.

This edition is not a retelling, but a carefully abridged version that preserves Charlotte Brontë’s original prose while making the novel more accessible to younger readers. It’s a wonderful reflection of Cristina and Katherine’s dedication, expertise, and love of literature—and we’re thrilled to see their work now available to support teachers and inspire students far beyond our own school.

Why Abridged Classics Matter for KS3 Learners

For many younger readers, tackling a full-length Victorian novel can feel overwhelming. Abridged editions like this one provide an essential bridge—maintaining the integrity of the original text while making it approachable and engaging for students at Key Stage 3. By simplifying complex language and condensing lengthy passages, these editions help learners build confidence, develop a love for classic literature, and access themes and ideas that remain relevant today. For teachers, they offer a practical way to introduce literary heritage without sacrificing comprehension or enjoyment.

We are incredibly proud of Cristina and Katherine and grateful to have such passionate and talented educators as part of our English Department here at Godolphin.

Congratulations, Cristina and Katherine—what a fantastic achievement!
