The first Thursday in March is always World Book Day and this year the Godolphin English Department and Library put on a range of activities to promote the enjoyment of reading. Mrs. Tarring’s Masked Reader quiz featured game members of staff - faces covered through the use of an App - reading extracts from a range of novels. Students had to guess the teacher and the novel.
Students were asked to participate in the Bake a Literary Cake Competition. There were imaginative and creative entries from Orla Edgecombe (Mr Men), Elsa Hawling (Super Worm) , Isla Jones-Perrot (The Book of Monsters), Corinne Middlemore(Journey to the River Sea) Rebecca Ashfield (Alice in Wonderland), Amelia Hart (The Shadow Hunters), Maya Gent (The Dragon Chronicles) and Emma Wilkinson (Winne-the-Pooh). The cakes were sold at lunchtime raising £150 for our collection towards Ukraine relief funds.
Second Year students had a drama workshop at The Salisbury Playhouse as part of the day’s activities. Here they made their study of The Merchant of Venice come alive! Students also entered into guess the author quizzes and sent in their Book Selfies: photographs of themselves reading in unusual places.
On Friday 4 March First and Second Years dressed up in recognizable characters from their favourite books. The Lord of the Rings, Winnie-the-Pooh, The Wizard of Oz and Harry Potter were just a very few of the costumes paraded in the Main Hall at breaktime as part of an impromptu fashion show. Staff participated too! At lunchtime the House Library Quiz took place with a decisive win by Douglas!
A successful couple of days celebrating one of the most important of all human inventions – books.
