Children’s author, Kiran Millwood Hargrave, entrances 270 children
Children’s author, Kiran Millwood-Hargrave, arrived at Godolphin in a gorgeous and flamboyant butterfly print dress; she explained to a packed audience of 9-12 year olds that her latest novel The Island at the End of Everything includes a wicked butterfly collector who is very unpopular with the children in the story. Pupils had come from St Martin’s Primary, Chafyn Grove, Avondale, Knighton House, Sandroyd and Salisbury Cathedral School to hear Kiran talk about her books and where she finds her inspiration and the writing process. Her first novel, The Girl of Ink and Stars, is a beautifully written adventure story about a mapmaker’s daughter and forbidden territories, which won this year’s Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. Questions abounded from children clearly taken by her new novel, set in a leper colony in the Philippines and, following a book signing, four intrepid Second Years asked if they could do a quick interview with her – they are keen to get it in next year’s Gazette.
