Academic Support & EAL
All students are supported to achieve their academic potential in our Sixth Form through regular meetings with their personal tutor and ongoing feedback from subject teachers. The Head of Sixth Form, David Hallen and Careers Adviser, Bethan Ferguson are both based in the Sixth Form Centre and provide easy access to further specialist advice.
Those who require it can also access additional academic learning support with specialist teaching staff. The focus of this is on helping students to explore their individual learning styles and overcome any barriers to learning they may face. Sixth Form students are encouraged to hone their independent study skills and lessons are based on using the most effective techniques with which to approach each curriculum subject.
EAL (English as an Additional Language)
The EAL department offers two types of support to Sixth Formers who have English as an additional language: IELTS preparation and general subject support. IELTS is the banded EAL qualification expected by UK universities and it consists of papers in reading, writing, speaking and listening. The writing papers are particularly hard to score well on, and the skills concerned are valuable for academic work in general, so most of our focus is on writing skills. We can be flexible about when you wish to take the exam. We can also work more generally on essay technique and on structuring short answers for A-level courses. Our goal is to support your academic progress, whatever your experience and ambitions.
