On Thursday 21 November, the Art Department welcomed this year’s artist in residence Patricia Low. The international artist trained as a Fine Art Painter and Printmaker at Chelsea School of Art before transitioning 20 years ago to make and decorate a variety of different ceramic vessels.
Her pots are decorated with animals, insects and birds in a variety of different oxides which are then glazed to give rich and lustrous surfaces. In addition, she produces beautiful watercolour images and prints to enhance her work.
Patricia spent all day in the department talking to the girls about her working methods, talking through her ideas and discussing her work, both two and three dimensions, in detail. She brought in examples of her painting, prints and pots. In addition they were fortunate to see her sketch books, journals, test tiles and technical glaze notebooks all of which allowed the girls to understand how artists develop their work.
She has set the GCSE Fourth Year students a design brief to work on for the next 10 weeks. After which she will return to school on Sunday 2 February to run an all day workshop where she will demonstrate her practical skills to the girls enabling all the GCSE students to develop their preparatory studies.
