We have had tremendous success when our students have wanted to continue their studies at a higher level. Many want to follow a purely academic path; others might want to combine their practical studies with an academic element, whilst others want to study pure Art and Design at Art College or University.
It is great comfort that we get the full support of the school community when students are deciding their career paths. Rarely do students give up Art and Design because they are advised against it because it might be seen as an “easy option” or not held in high regard by a particular university or admissions tutor. Students opt for Art and Design because they want to and are guaranteed, if they work hard and follow advice, to ultimately come out at the end of the course with a high grade.
We regularly have students accepted to do courses unrelated to Art and Design who study the subject as one of their A level choices. These have included Philosophy at Durham, Geography at Newcastle, Medicine at Oxford, History at Manchester, Psychology at Loughborough and Modern Languages at Bristol.
Whatever their individual choice we hope to provide them with the necessary skills to ensure that they get on to the right course. We work very closely with the Head of the Sixth Form, the Director of Studies, the Careers Advisor and other professional colleagues to ensure that the information that we give our students is correct and fully up to date. We are in regular contact with a number of Art and Design Colleges and Universities around the country which enables us to remain up to date with the relevant qualifications and courses.
We advise students on the best courses and help to guide them through the application procedure. Most of our students who want to study Art and Design will do an Arts Foundation Course first before ultimately going on to a degree course of their choice. However there are some students who need a portfolio of art work for interview to get into their university of their choice. These might include applications for Interior Design, Architectural Design, Product Design and Engineering Design.
We have a reputation for getting any student who wants to go on to an Arts Foundation Course at Art College on to the course of their choice. In most cases these are in the south of the country but from time to time these can be further a field in Scotland and Wales. In many cases we get students onto all their chosen courses which allow them the greatest of all possible choices.
Many students still keep in touch with us whilst at university and beyond providing us with valuable input into particular courses and other advice which we pass onto our students.
