Friends & Privacy

What are Friend Lists? How can I create Friend Lists? How can I use Friend Lists?

Friend Lists provide organized groupings of your friends on Facebook. For example, you can create a Friend List for your friends that meet for weekly book club meetings. You can filter your view of each list’s stream of activity separately on the home page. Friend Lists are easy to manage and allow you to send messages and invites to these groups of people all at once.

To create and customize your own Friend Lists, please follow these steps:

1.
Click the "Create" link that appears beneath the filters on the left side of your home page or your Friends page. Or, click the "Create New List" button from the "All Friends" tab of the Friends page.

2.     Type the title of your list and hit enter.

3.     Add friends to the list by typing their names into the "Add to List" field or selecting them from the list.

4.     Select "Save List" to store your changes.

In addition, if you have more than two Friend Lists, you can easily add or remove friends from lists by using the drop-down menu that appears next to their names on the "All Friends" tab of the Friends page.

How can I use Friend Lists to help control my privacy?

You can use Friend Lists to create different privacy levels for different groups of your friends. This allows you to selectively open more of your profile to the people closest to you. On the Profile section of your Privacy Settings page, clicking "Edit Custom Settings" will open a field for "Except these people." Adding a friend or Friend List name here will hide the information in question from these people when they view your profile.

If you add a user to more than one Friend List, and those Friend Lists have conflicting privacy settings, the more restrictive of the privacy settings will always be respected.

If you enter three or more friends as an exception, you’ll have the option to create a new Friend List to group these people. You can create, edit and delete Friend Lists from your Friends page.

How do I add someone to a Friend List when I send a friend request?

You can add someone to a Friend List when you send him or her a friend request. That way, if they confirm your request, they will be automatically placed into the designated Friend List and will follow all of the privacy settings you have set for the Friend List.

To add someone to a Friend List when you send a friend request, please follow the steps below:

1.     Click "Add to Friends."

2.     Select "Add [Friend’s Name] to a Friend List."

3.     Use the drop-down menu to select a Friend List that you have already created or select "Create a New List…" if you want to make a new Friend List for this person.

4.     Click "Add Friend."

If you create a Friend List during the request process, the Friend List will be permanently stored on the Friends page. You can always go to the Friends page to edit the list.

To prevent users on this list from seeing certain content, please follow the steps below:

1.     Click the "Privacy Settings" option in the Settings drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page.

2.     Go to the Profile section.

3.     Select any Profile privacy setting and click "Edit Custom Settings."

4.     Enter the name of your limited profile friend list in the "Except These People" section to restrict these users from viewing the profile content you selected.

Limited Profile

What is a Limited Profile?

The Limited Profile functionality is a type of Friend List. You can limit the privacy settings for any friend list you create. If you had people on your Limited Profile, they have been moved to a new friend list called "Limited Profile," and this friend list has been added to the appropriate places on your privacy settings. For example, if you hid your Wall Posts in your Limited Profile, the new Limited Profile friend list has been placed under the "Except These People" setting for Wall Posts.

For Parents:

How can I gain access to my child's account?

Facebook are generally forbidden by privacy laws against giving unauthorized access to someone who is not an account holder. If you are a parent or school official, Facebook encourage you to use software tools on your own computers to assist in overseeing your child's Internet access. Please do a search for computer-based Internet control technology on your preferred search engine to discover options that you may wish to pursue.

If your child is under 13 and you believe they have created a Facebook account, please request that facebook permanently delete the account. Additionally, applicable laws may give you the right to access personal information they have provided before Facebook follows its policy of promptly deleting such data. You may access and direct the deletion of such data by having them sign into the account and then deactivating the account, or making a request to Facebook.

What if my child sees inappropriate content or offensive material?

Facebook takes the safety of its users very seriously and takes significant efforts to take down any objectionable material that may be posted on the site. Facebook encourage users to report offensive profiles, messages, groups and photos. Reported items are then reviewed by customer support representatives and removed if deemed in violation of our Terms of Use. Users may also block others from finding them in searches, viewing their profile or sending them messages.

What kind of privacy controls do you have?

Facebook is based on networks that correspond to high schools, colleges, workplaces and geographic regions. Each user's profile can be seen only by those in the same network or by people in other networks who have been mutually confirmed as friends. Every Facebook user has the ability to customize his or her privacy settings. This allows users to limit who can view their profile (e.g., everyone in their networks, some people in their networks, or only their friends) and to choose who can see specific parts of their profile (e.g., their contact information, their personal favorites, their work history, etc.).

How should I help my child use this site wisely?

The best thing to do is to talk to your children and teach them Internet safety. Remind them to:

Never share their password with anyone

Understand their privacy settings

Report people that violate Facebook's Terms of Use

Block anyone that might be sending unwanted content
