LIFE AS A BOARDER

Life as a boarder
Life as a Boarder
Boarders rise at 7.30am, breakfast about 8.00am and are in School by 8.25am to register with their tutors. Houses are open at lunchtime for students to relax and meet their friends. After academic lessons end at 3.45pm, they may return to their houses for tea. Three sessions containing activities and supervised prep then run in School until 6.45pm, although boarders may return to their Houses at 6.00pm if they wish. From the Third Year, both boarders and Sarums are allowed to go in small groups into Salisbury (a 10 minute walk) during first session once or twice a week. Supper is at 6.45pm and there is a quiet time from around 7.45-8.30pm, during which girls are expected to read, study or engage in some other quiet activity. Lights out times are scheduled according to age group, and begin at 9.30pm.

On Saturdays girls finish prep in the morning, followed by a chance to go into Salisbury. Many play in matches during the afternoon, or participate in expedition work for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, or with the CCF. First, Second and Third Years who are not thus involved join the Weekend Activities programme, which is largely funded by the School, and runs on Saturdays and Sundays. Many activities are based in School. They include cookery (e.g. Spanish, Japanese); craft (e.g. design a T-shirt, decorate flip-flops; riding, and also new sports, such as archery). Popular sessions this year have also included calligraphy, designing Valentine cocktails (non-alcoholic!), a make-over and deportment workshop, and a chance to try out mini motorbikes and buggies. We also run trips out of School: recent visits have included Longleat, the BBC Studios at White City, the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth, the Hawk Conservancy and the New Forest Owl and Otter Centre.

On Saturday evenings there may be a House event or outing; or the girls may relax by watching films or simply socialising with their friends.

On Sundays there is either a service at Salisbury Cathedral or a morning or evening service in School, and the Weekend Activities programme continues. In the early evening members of the Lower Sixth organise activities for First and Second Years: these can include face painting, karaoke and party games.

One weekend a year is devoted to the Inter-House Performing Arts Competition, directed by the Lower Sixth.
